Implant Brands
Which country are Anthogyr implants from, and who owns the brand?
A French brand born in Sallanches, at the foot of Mont Blanc; wholly owned by the Swiss Straumann Group since 2019
Most people hear the Anthogyr name on an implant card, in a quote or through the word 'Axiom' spoken by their dentist. The first question is always the same: which country, and whose is it? Both have a short, documented answer. The more useful question, though, is this: which Axiom profile should be written on your card, and what do the published studies on this system actually show?
Short answer
Anthogyr is a French brand. The company's head office and production plant are in Sallanches in the French Alps, close to Mont Blanc. It was founded in 1947 as a manufacturer of dental instruments and launched its implant system, Axiom, in 2009. The Switzerland-based Straumann Group bought a 30 per cent stake in 2016 and raised its share to 100 per cent in 2019; since 1 June 2019 the company has been a brand wholly owned by the group. Straumann positions it in the more affordable 'value' segment.

From watchmaking to implants: where Anthogyr came from, and who owns it today
Anthogyr's roots go back much further than implants, to the precision mechanics tradition of Haute-Savoie. According to the company's own history page, the family started out in watchmaking in 1800, and in 1917 Émile Anthoine founded the company called 'Anthoine Émile et Fils'. In 1943 dental instruments began to be produced; the brand name comes from here too: 'Antho' from Anthoine, and 'gyr' from the meaning of turning. The Anthogyr company, focused on dentistry, was founded in 1947 by René Anthoine and for many years produced handpieces and surgical motors.
The move into implants happened step by step. The same history page writes that in 1984 they took on the contract manufacture of another designer's disc implant, and that in 1997 they launched the first implant under their own name (Anthofit). Straumann's 2019 press release, however, says that Anthogyr began manufacturing dental implants in 1980. The same release also writes that the company has a history of about 30 years in implantology; in other words, the sources do not agree on a single starting year. What is certain is the move in 2007 to a new and larger production plant in Sallanches and the arrival in 2009 of Axiom, today's main line.
The relationship with Straumann has two stages. At the beginning of 2016 the Straumann Group bought 30 per cent of Anthogyr and took over the company's business in China. On 12 March 2019 the parties signed the agreement that raised Straumann's share to 100 per cent. According to Straumann's presentation for the first quarter of 2019, the company was fully incorporated into the group on 1 June 2019. The press release writes that at that date Anthogyr had 400 employees, generated revenue of about 57 million Swiss francs and developed and manufactured its products in France and Luxembourg.
This is why there are two correct answers to the question of which country. The product's origin, design and main production are in France; its owner is a Swiss group with its head office in Basel. In its release Straumann describes Anthogyr as 'an affordable, high-quality European brand' and states that in its own market, France, the company is the largest provider of non-premium implant solutions. Where a single implant that reaches you was made, though, is told most definitely by the label on its box.
Axiom is the name of a family. The brand's website lists the Axiom Bone Level line (which sits at bone level) and the Axiom Tissue Level line (whose collar extends to gum level), different body profiles called REG, PX and X3 for Bone Level, Axiom 2.8 for narrow gaps and, in addition, a mini implant system. According to an independent product register, BL REG is the general-purpose profile, is designed to be placed about 0.5 mm below the bone level and shares the same prosthetic connection as the X3 and PX profiles. In studies carried out on the system, this connection is described as a one-size internal conical connection.
The company also has a prosthetic side. In 2012 Anthogyr acquired Simeda, which designs and produces patient-specific prosthetic parts; today it produces digital (CAD/CAM) top parts and bridge frameworks under the Simeda name. What this means in practice is this: parts from the manufacturer's own line or compatible parts can be placed on an Anthogyr implant. Which one was used is information that will be of direct use to you in a future repair.
The strongest piece of the published data comes from Italy. At six centres, in 60 patients each needing two single-tooth implants, one implant in the same mouth was placed 0.5 mm and the other 1.5 mm below the bone level, at random. By year 10, 8 patients had dropped out of follow-up; no statistical difference was found between the two depths in terms of implant loss (7 versus 3), complications and mean bone loss (0.38 mm versus 0.17 mm). The study's implants were from Anthogyr and the manufacturer partly funded the study; the authors state that the data belong to them and that the sponsor did not interfere in the analysis.
Even so, the brand is the smaller half of the question. Whether an implant stays in the mouth over the years is determined more strongly by planning, how the load is spread, factors such as smoking and uncontrolled diabetes, and regular maintenance. Axiom is a conventional two-piece system: it sits in the inner part of the bone and needs sufficient volume there. The implant we use in the protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours with the Ihde method, on the other hand, belongs to a different class: a one-piece corticobasal implant that anchors in the hard outer layer of the jaw. This is not a judgement on Axiom; it is two separate answers given to two separate questions.
When a conventional system like Axiom is a sensible choice
The points below look less at the brand name than at the two-piece implant design that sits inside the bone and needs healing time. Points specific to Axiom are indicated separately.
When it fits
- If the CBCT scan shows enough boneA conventional implant needs width and height in the inner part of the bone. If this volume is there, a two-piece system like Axiom can be placed directly; which profile and size suits you is a decision made on a three-dimensional image.
- If there is a narrow gap at the front of the mouthAxiom 2.8 is for narrow gaps. In a retrospective study in China in which 54 two-piece 2.8 mm implants in 32 patients were followed for 8 years on average, 1 implant was lost and no fracture of an implant or a top part was seen. The study's abstract does not state the brand of the implant. It is a small study; but it is a concrete piece of data when a narrow implant is being discussed.
- If you already have Axiom in your mouthContinuing with the same system keeps you to a single inventory of parts. The fact that the Axiom Bone Level profiles share the same prosthetic connection simplifies the choice of top part later on; even so, check which profile is written on your card.
- If you have time to waitIn the conventional protocol there is usually a wait of several months for the implant to fuse with the bone. If your schedule allows for this, healing that has not been rushed is a sensible choice.
When it doesn't
- If there is advanced bone resorptionIf there is no volume left to anchor in, a conventional implant often needs a graft or a sinus procedure first, and treatment stretches over months. At this point, a different class of implant that uses the hard outer layer of the jaw is also worth discussing.
- If you expect fixed teeth within a few daysThe expectation of going home with fixed teeth in a short time is met not by the brand but by the type of plan. The timetable of the conventional two-piece protocol is generally not built around this.
- If it is presented as 'the same as Straumann'Being brands of the same group does not mean that they are the same system. If the quote says Anthogyr, the data and parts of the implants that carry Straumann's own name should not be taken as valid for this implant.
- If price is the only reason for the choiceAnthogyr sits in the more affordable segment within the group. That is not a problem in itself; but if the only reason for the choice is price, its suitability for your mouth has not been discussed.
Five questions to ask when Anthogyr is recommended
If the answers are short and clear, there is a considered choice behind the plan. Every answer that stays vague is a gap you will have to fill in later.
- 1
Which Axiom line and profile?
Bone Level or Tissue Level; if Bone Level, REG, PX or X3; if it is a narrow gap, 2.8? This information should be written on the implant card. 'Anthogyr' on its own is not enough for a repair.
- 2
Which diameter and length, and why?
It should be possible to explain the choice in terms of the width, height and density of your bone. If a narrow or short implant is planned in the molar region, ask separately for the reason.
- 3
Is the top part original or compatible?
A part from the manufacturer's line and a compatible part produced by another firm are not the same thing. Which one is used affects finding a replacement part years later and how the part seats on the implant.
- 4
Can I see the barcode on the label?
Medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS). The number on the label shows the product's manufacturer and its registration; this is a more concrete check than anything you hear said about the brand.
- 5
What happens if a part breaks?
Asking at the outset how a broken top part or screw would be removed, how long the replacement would take to arrive and what the procedure would involve is a normal request. The laboratory study below shows why this question matters.
Things that make more difference than the brand
If the points below are in place, the difference between brands narrows; if they are not, no brand makes up for the gap.
A complete record
System and line name, profile, diameter, length, lot number, the area where it was placed and the type of top part. If you have this information, another dentist can pick up the work where it was left off.
The load plan
How many implants, in which area, and how the load will be spread. Clenching at night, a bridge extended towards the back or load piled onto a single implant produce far more problems than the difference between brands.
A plan based on a CBCT scan
The position, angle and depth of the implant are decided on a three-dimensional image. Being shown the plan and having its reasoning explained is something to ask about before the brand.
Maintenance and check-ups
Inflammation around an implant often progresses without causing pain. Even in the 2.8 mm study, inflammation around the implant was diagnosed in 2 of the 54 implants. What catches it early is regular check-ups; no brand does this job for you.
If the loss extends to more than one tooth
If you are missing several teeth, or you have been told there is not enough bone, you can send the panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan you have through the assessment form. The image is read by the dentist who will carry out the treatment; the final decision is made after an examination and a CBCT scan.
What often gets mixed up about Anthogyr
A few misleading shortcuts circulate around a brand that has changed hands and sits under the roof of a large group.
"Anthogyr is really Straumann"
The ownership is the same, the system is different. Anthogyr's Axiom connection and parts are its own; they are not interchangeable with the implants that carry Straumann's own name. What is shared is the corporate roof and the distribution network within the group.
"It is French-made, so it is good", or the opposite
Origin is not an indicator of quality on its own. What is decisive is the product's documentation, the clinical follow-up data behind it and the availability of parts. These are read not from the name of a country but from the label and from published studies.
"A study supported by the manufacturer is independent evidence too"
The 10-year randomised study in Italy is valuable, but the manufacturer supplied the implants and partly funded the study. The authors write this openly. In addition, the study compares not the brand with another brand but two placement depths.
"There are no fractures in a two-piece system"
In a laboratory test published in 2026, Axiom implants in three diameters were stressed under repeated oblique loading until they fractured. No implant body fractured; in all the samples, what fractured was the implant-level top part and its screw. The authors note that this mode of fracture may make it harder to remove the part and renew the prosthesis. This is a laboratory result and does not show how often it happens in the mouth.
"Every dentist can recognise the brand from an X-ray"
If you do not have your record, working out the brand from an X-ray is not as easy as people think. And which Axiom profile was used is something an X-ray usually does not tell; this information is found only in the record.
What you should have if Anthogyr implants have been fitted
Nobody asks for these documents today; but years from now, in another dentist's chair, they will be the first thing you are asked for.
A detailed implant card
The card should say more than just 'Anthogyr': it should give the Axiom line (BL or TL), the profile (REG, PX, X3 or 2.8), the diameter, the length, the lot number and the area where it was placed. If anything is missing, ask the clinic that carried out the treatment to complete it.
The type of top part
Is the top part from the manufacturer's line, a Simeda product, or another firm's compatible part? When there is a fracture or a renewal is needed, this information speeds up finding the right replacement.
A copy of the barcode
The barcode on the product label carries the number that identifies the implant in ÜTS. Keep it together with your card; keep a photograph of it on your phone as well.
The X-ray from the first day
The X-ray that shows where your bone level was at the start. With an implant placed below the bone level, how the bone edge has changed over the years can only be read by comparing against this X-ray.
Don't wait if
- If a tooth moves, rattles or feels odd when you chew. Loosening of a top part or a screw can be solved with a small job when it is noticed early. The longer you wait, the more the risk of fracture rises and the harder it becomes to remove the broken part.
- If there is bleeding, swelling or discharge around the implant. Inflammation around an implant often progresses painlessly. Caught early, it can be stopped; regaining bone that has been lost is much harder.
- If you clench or grind your teeth at night. This increases the load on the implant and the top part. Your dentist may recommend protection such as a night guard; if you have only just noticed it, say so.
- If you do not have your record, or you are going to move. Call the clinic that carried out the treatment and get the system details, your X-rays and your card in full. If a part is needed where you are going, the line, profile and size details make it possible to order it straight away.
How choosing Anthogyr shows up in the quote
The name of the implant does not determine the difference in a quote on its own. The total is made up of these items:
- The unit cost of the system
- Straumann positions Anthogyr in the group's more affordable segment. But in a multi-unit plan, the item that determines the total is usually not the implant body.
- Choice of top part
- The choice between a ready-made part, patient-specific CAD/CAM production or a compatible part can move the quote more than the implant does. Check which one is written in the quote.
- Preparatory procedures
- If a graft, a sinus procedure or extractions are needed, these are separate items and are common in conventional plans. They also lengthen the treatment.
- Repairs over the years
- With a system whose parts are easy to find, changing a screw or a top part stays a small job. This is the item that does not appear on the invoice but may turn out to be the most expensive in the long run.
Frequently asked questions
Which country are Anthogyr implants from?
France. The company's head office and production plant are in Sallanches in Haute-Savoie, in the Mont Blanc valley. Since 2019 its owner has been the Straumann Group, based in the Swiss city of Basel. The short answer: a brand of French origin belonging to a Swiss group.
Which company owns Anthogyr?
The Straumann Group. Straumann bought a 30 per cent stake in 2016 and on 12 March 2019 signed the agreement that raised its share to 100 per cent. According to the group's first-quarter presentation, the company was fully incorporated into the group on 1 June 2019.
Are Anthogyr and Straumann the same implant?
No. They are two separate brands of the same group. Anthogyr's Axiom system has its own connection and parts; the parts of the implants that carry Straumann's own name do not fit it. Their positions within the group differ too: Anthogyr is in the more affordable segment.
What is the difference between Anthogyr and Neodent?
Both are brands in the Straumann Group's value segment, but their origins and systems are separate: Neodent comes from Brazil, Anthogyr from France. Their parts are not interchangeable; which part is needed is determined by the system name on the implant card.
What does Axiom mean, is it the name of the implant?
Axiom is the name of the implant family that Anthogyr brought out in 2009. It includes the Bone Level and Tissue Level lines, the REG, PX and X3 profiles for Bone Level and the 2.8 option for narrow gaps. Which one is written on your card is the information needed to find the right part later on.
How many years do Anthogyr implants last?
The length of time is determined not by the brand but by planning, load, smoking, diabetes control and maintenance. In the Italian randomised study carried out with Anthogyr implants, mean bone loss stayed below 1 mm in the patients followed up to year 10; 8 patients dropped out of follow-up and a total of 10 implants were lost. The manufacturer partly funded the study.
How can I tell that an Anthogyr implant is genuine?
Ask to see the barcode on the label of the product that will be used. Medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System; that number shows the product's manufacturer. The same information should also be on your implant card.
I have Anthogyr in my mouth; should my new implant be the same brand too?
If possible, the same system makes things easier, because it means a single inventory of parts and a single set of instruments. It is not compulsory; different brands can be present in the same mouth. The drawback is that maintenance and the supply of parts become more complicated.
Is Anthogyr used in the Ihde protocol?
No. The protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours works with a different class of implant: one-piece corticobasal implants that anchor in the hard outer layer of the jaw. This is not a judgement on conventional systems such as Axiom; if there is enough bone and time to wait, they are a sensible choice too. Which one suits you is shown by a CBCT scan.
