Which country are BioHorizons implants from?

USA, Birmingham, Alabama; born out of university research in 1994, today in Henry Schein's implant group. Laser-Lok, though, is the detail that has overtaken the name

Most people who look up BioHorizons have heard two things: that it is American-made and that it has a surface called 'Laser-Lok'. Both are true, but the evidence for the second is narrower than the advertising suggests. The information that will be useful to you years from now, though, is which line went into your mouth, and with which connection.

Short answer

BioHorizons is a US brand: it was born in 1994 out of research carried out at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, its head office is in Birmingham, Alabama, and the company says it has manufactured its implants in the USA since it was founded. The US healthcare products company Henry Schein bought a 60 per cent stake at the end of 2013; today BioHorizons is part of the BioHorizons Camlog group, which Henry Schein runs together with its Camlog brand. Its well-known lines are Tapered Pro, Tapered Pro Conical, Tapered Internal, Tapered Plus and Tapered Short.

Where BioHorizons came from, and who owns it today

According to the company's own account, BioHorizons was founded in 1994 on research carried out at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The founders include the dentist Carl E. Misch, known for his writing on implant biomechanics, the biomedical engineer Martha Bidez and Todd Strong. Steve Boggan, who ran the company for many years, joined in 1995; today he is one of the people who run Henry Schein's implant businesses.

The answer to the question of which country is the USA. In the FDA's 2023 decision, the manufacturer's address is given as Birmingham, Alabama. The company writes that it has manufactured its implants in the USA since it was founded and keeps research and production in the same country; this is the company's own statement. Where a single implant that reaches you was made is told most definitely by the label on its box.

Ownership changed in 2013. Henry Schein, a NASDAQ-listed healthcare products company based in Melville in the US state of New York, announced on 31 December 2013 that it had acquired 60 per cent of BioHorizons. The announcement said that with this step, together with its investment in the European implant manufacturer CAMLOG, Henry Schein had gained a strong position in the US and German implant markets. Henry Schein's annual report for 2025 also refers to BioHorizons as a business the company acquired in 2014.

Today BioHorizons and Camlog are run together under the roof of BioHorizons Camlog Group, whose head office is in the Swiss city of Basel. This partnership is reflected in the products too: BioHorizons' own product list also includes Camlog's CONELOG and ceramic CERALOG implants; Tapered Pro Conical, as the manufacturer describes it, combines CONELOG's deep conical connection with BioHorizons' Tapered Pro body. In other words, two separate brands within the same group, with a shared design in some products.

The BioHorizons name is most often mentioned together with Laser-Lok. Laser-Lok is a surface made up of regular, micron-scale channels cut by laser into the collar of the implant, the part that meets the gum and the topmost edge of the bone. The manufacturer says that this surface allows the connective tissue to attach physically to the implant, prevents the gum tissue from migrating downwards and so preserves the bone edge. According to the manufacturer, the researcher who first documented this attachment is the periodontist Myron Nevins.

The independent evidence, however, says something narrower. In a 2017 meta-analysis combining 15 human studies and 772 implants, bone loss around implants with a Laser-Lok type collar was significantly lower than around implants with a machined (smooth) collar. But when they were compared with implants with a roughened collar, no significant difference was found. In the rate at which implants stayed in the mouth, no difference emerged in any comparison. The authors write that the variation between the studies was high and that the results need to be read with care.

This puts the sentence 'more effective than other implant designs' on the manufacturer's research page into its proper context: the difference has mostly been shown against the older type of implant with a smooth collar. In a randomised study that followed 78 immediately loaded BioHorizons implants replacing a single missing tooth at the front of the mouth (the comparison group was the same manufacturer's implant without Laser-Lok), bone loss at the end of three years was found to be 0.59 mm on average in the Laser-Lok group and 1.17 mm in the group without Laser-Lok; one implant was lost in each group. Both arms of the study were the same manufacturer's implant.

BioHorizons' lines are conventional two-piece implants that sit inside the bone, and they need sufficient volume in the bone. The outcome, meanwhile, is determined by planning, how the load is spread, smoking and diabetes control and regular maintenance more than by the brand name. The implant used in our protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours with the Ihde method belongs to a different class: a one-piece corticobasal implant that anchors in the hard outer layer of the jaw.

When a conventional system like BioHorizons is a sensible choice

The points below are not specific to BioHorizons alone; they look at the two-piece implant design that sits inside the bone, and at the design of the collar surface.

When it fits

  • If the CBCT scan shows enough boneA conventional implant needs width and height in the inner part of the bone. If the volume is there, it can be placed without any additional procedure; Tapered Short is offered for limited bone height and 3.0 mm options for narrow areas; according to the FDA text, 3.0 mm implants are used for a single tooth only in the region of the lower incisors and the upper lateral incisors.
  • If the appearance of the gum at the front mattersThere are studies in which Laser-Lok was examined for a single missing tooth at the front of the mouth. In these studies the gum pocket was found to be shallower and the bone loss lower than with a smooth-collared implant; what this means for your tissue is determined by an examination.
  • If immediate loading will be based on measurementAccording to the indications for use cleared by the FDA, if BioHorizons implants are to be loaded immediately, they are loaded either with a temporary prosthesis that is kept out of the bite, or with several implants splinted together or with a prosthesis supported by several implants. For the short Tapered Short implants, the same text provides for delayed loading, not immediate loading. Ask whether the plan fits within this framework.
  • If you already have BioHorizons in your mouthContinuing with the same line and the same connection keeps your inventory of parts simple. But first it has to be known for certain which line and which connection the existing implant is.

When it doesn't

  • If there is advanced bone resorptionIf there is no volume left to anchor in, a conventional implant often needs a graft or a sinus procedure first, and treatment stretches over months. In this situation, a different class of implant that uses the hard outer layer of the bone should also be discussed.
  • If Laser-Lok is presented as something that 'prevents bone loss'The independent meta-analysis found no significant difference in bone against implants with a roughened collar. The surface is a detail; it does not cancel out the effect of smoking, diabetes and a lack of maintenance.
  • If you are not given the line and connection detailsThe 45-degree internal hex connection of Tapered Pro and the 7.5-degree conical connection of Tapered Pro Conical do not take the same part. If this information is not in writing, the dentist who works in that mouth later on will be proceeding by guesswork.
  • If the only reason for the choice is that it is 'American-made'The country of manufacture is one part of the quality system, but on its own it says nothing about whether the implant suits your mouth. Suitability is read from a CBCT scan and an examination.

Five questions to ask when BioHorizons is recommended

If the answers are short and clear, there is a considered choice behind the plan. Every answer that stays vague is a gap you will have to fill in later.

  1. 1

    Which line will be used?

Tapered Pro, Tapered Pro Conical, Tapered Internal, Tapered Plus, Tapered Short or another line. It should be possible to explain the choice in terms of the density, width and height of your bone.

  2. 2

    What type of connection?

A conical internal hex or a deep conical connection, a narrow or a regular platform? The top parts, and every future change of a screw or a part, depend on this answer.

  3. 3

Is it a line with Laser-Lok, and why did you choose it?

Not all BioHorizons implants have Laser-Lok. If it has been chosen, the reason should be explained in terms of your tissue, in particular the thickness of the gum at the front of the mouth.

  4. 4

    Are the top parts original?

The manufacturer's own parts and parts that other firms sell as compatible are not the same thing. You should be told which is being used, and it should be put on record.

  5. 5

Can I see the barcode on the label?

Medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS). The number on the label shows the product's manufacturer and its registration; this is a more concrete check than anything you hear said about the brand.

Things that make more difference than the brand

If the first four points below are in place, the difference between brands narrows; if they are not, no surface technology makes up for the gap.

01

A complete record

Line name, connection type, platform, diameter, length, lot number and the area where it was placed. If you have this information, another dentist can pick up the work where it was left off.

02

Anchorage during placement

The resistance with which the implant seats in the bone can be measured. The decision on immediate loading should be based on this measurement, not on the brand name or the surface.

03

The gum and maintenance

What the collar surface promises only means something in tissue that is kept clean. Regular check-ups and professional cleaning have a greater effect than the difference in surface.

04

A plan based on a CBCT scan

The number, position and angle of the implants are decided on a three-dimensional image. Being shown the plan and having its reasoning explained is something to ask about before the brand.

05

If the loss extends to more than one tooth

If you are missing several teeth, or you have been told there is not enough bone, you can send us the panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan you have through the form. The dentist who will carry out the treatment reads the image, and we will write to you within 24 hours. This is a preliminary assessment; the final decision is made after an examination and a CBCT scan.

What often gets mixed up about BioHorizons

A strong story about a surface and a group with two brands produce a few misleading shortcuts online.

"Laser-Lok raises the implant's survival rate"

In independent meta-analyses, no difference was found between the Laser-Lok type collar and other collars in the rate at which implants stayed in the mouth. The difference that has been shown is on the side of bone loss and pocket depth, and that mostly against smooth-collared implants.

"BioHorizons and Camlog are the same implant"

They are two brands of the same group. Some products share a design, for example Tapered Pro Conical takes CONELOG's connection as its starting point; but the line names, connections and parts are separate for each product. Parts are chosen not by brand name but by line and connection.

"It is American-made, so there will be no problems"

The factors that stand out in implant loss are smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, a lack of maintenance and mistakes in load distribution. The country of manufacture prevents none of these; inflammation around an implant can be seen with every system.

"The manufacturer's research page is sufficient evidence"

The studies a manufacturer selects are generally the favourable ones. Putting the same question to an independent review that combines many studies gives a more balanced answer; for BioHorizons that answer is 'better than a smooth collar, similar to a rough collar'.

What you should have if BioHorizons implants have been fitted

Nobody asks for these documents today; but years from now, in another dentist's chair, they will be the first thing you are asked for.

  1. An implant card with the line and the connection

The card should say more than just 'BioHorizons': it should give the line name, the connection and platform, the diameter, the length and the lot number. If anything is missing, ask the clinic that carried out the treatment to complete it.

  2. A copy of the barcode

The barcode on the product label carries the number that identifies the implant in ÜTS. Keep it together with your card.

  3. The X-ray from the first day

The X-ray that shows where your bone level was at the start. Only by comparing against this X-ray can you see what has become, in your case, of the bone preservation that Laser-Lok promises.

  4. The type of top part

Whether it is the manufacturer's own part, a compatible product or patient-specific. When a screw or a top part is changed, this information speeds up finding the right replacement.

Don't wait if

  • If a tooth moves or a screw feels loose. Carrying on chewing with a loose screw can break the screw. Tightening a screw early is a small job; removing a broken one is laborious.
  • If there is bleeding, swelling or discharge around the implant. Inflammation around an implant often progresses without causing pain, and it can be seen whatever the surface. Caught early, it can be stopped; regaining bone that has been lost is much harder. If the swelling is spreading quickly, is accompanied by a fever, or swallowing and breathing become difficult, do not wait: call 112 or go to the nearest A&E department.
  • If you are going to have an MRI scan. In 2023 the FDA cleared the submission concerning the MRI compatibility of existing BioHorizons implants and top parts. This clearance does not mean that a scan can be carried out under any conditions; the scan is subject to specific conditions. Show your implant card to the MRI unit before the scan; they will assess the conditions according to the record of the device and the part.
  • If you do not know which line your implant is. Call the clinic that carried out the treatment and ask for your record. If there is no record, an attempt will be made to identify the system from an X-ray; this is possible, but confirming the line and the connection can take time.

How choosing BioHorizons shows up in the quote

The implant's country or surface does not explain the difference in a quote on its own. The total is made up of these items:

Choice of line and body
Within the same brand, the lines can differ in cost. Check which line is written in the quote; the phrase 'BioHorizons implant' is not enough on its own.
Top parts
An original part, a compatible product or a patient-specific part. In multi-unit plans this choice can make more difference than the implant body.
The prosthesis and laboratory work
In full-mouth plans, the material and workmanship of the bridgework make up most of the total.
Preparatory procedures and later maintenance
A graft, a sinus procedure or extractions are separate items. The burden of repairs over the years depends on how easily the part can be found in the country where you live.

Frequently asked questions

Which country are BioHorizons implants from?

The USA. The company was founded in 1994 on research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and its head office is in Birmingham, Alabama. The company says it has manufactured its implants in the USA since it was founded.

Who owns BioHorizons, is it Henry Schein?

Yes. The US healthcare products company Henry Schein announced on 31 December 2013 that it had acquired 60 per cent of BioHorizons; the company's 2025 annual report also refers to BioHorizons as a business it acquired in 2014. Today it is run together with Camlog under the BioHorizons Camlog group.

What is Laser-Lok?

A surface made up of regular, micron-scale channels cut by laser into the collar of the implant. The manufacturer says that this surface allows the connective tissue to attach to the implant and preserves the bone edge. In independent meta-analyses, less bone loss and a shallower pocket were seen than with smooth-collared implants; no difference in bone was found compared with roughened collars.

Does Laser-Lok make an implant last longer?

There is no evidence showing this. In one meta-analysis and one systematic review, no difference was found between implants with a Laser-Lok type collar and others in the rate at which implants stayed in the mouth. What determines lifespan more strongly is planning, load distribution, smoking, diabetes control and maintenance.

What is the relationship between BioHorizons and Camlog?

Both are part of Henry Schein's implant business and are run under BioHorizons Camlog Group, whose head office is in Basel. BioHorizons' product list also includes Camlog's CONELOG and CERALOG implants. But the parts are separate by brand and by line; a part from one does not automatically fit the other.

Are BioHorizons implants any good?

It is a system that has been produced for more than thirty years and has published clinical studies behind it. When reading the publications, look at what it was compared with: the superiority of Laser-Lok has mostly been shown against smooth-collared implants. The outcome is determined more strongly by planning, load distribution, smoking, diabetes control and maintenance than by the brand.

How can I tell that a BioHorizons implant is genuine?

Ask to see the barcode on the label of the product that will be used. Medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System; that number shows the product's manufacturer. After treatment, the same information should also be on your implant card.

Can I have an MRI scan with BioHorizons implants?

In 2023 the FDA cleared the submission concerning the MRI compatibility of existing BioHorizons implants and top parts. The scanning conditions are set by the MRI unit; taking your implant card and the name of the line with you makes the assessment easier.

Do you use BioHorizons?

Our protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours works with a different class of implant: one-piece corticobasal implants that anchor in the hard outer layer of the jaw. This is not an assessment of conventional systems such as BioHorizons; if there is enough bone and time to wait, they are a sensible choice too. Which one suits you is shown by a CBCT scan.
