Turkish-made or imported implants?

That is the wrong question. The right one is: can its certification be verified, and will its parts still be available ten years from now?

This debate usually starts with nationality and stays there. Yet where the part placed in your mouth was made is, on its own, neither a guarantee nor a risk. On this page we set out when the question of origin really matters, when it does not matter at all, and the four questions you should ask instead.

Short answer

Country of origin is not a measure of quality on its own. How reliable an implant is can be read not from the country where it was made but from the standards it was made to, whether its certificates can be verified, the continuity of the system and whether its parts can still be obtained years later. The one place where origin really matters is geography: the country where your follow-up and any repairs will take place directly affects the choice of system.

Where origin makes a difference, and where it does not

Let us start with where it makes no difference. Almost all modern implants are made from titanium or a titanium alloy; although surface treatments go by different names, they give similar results. The country where a product is made does not change this basic fact of material and design. Neither 'it's solid because it's German-made' nor 'it's weak because it's Turkish-made' rests on any actual measure.

A second fact muddies the waters further: a brand's headquarters and its place of manufacture are not always the same. Company acquisitions, moving production to other countries and contract manufacturing are all common. So while a brand's name may call one country to mind, the place of manufacture on the box may be another. This is not a flaw but the normal way the industry works; it does mean, though, that the answer to 'which country is it from?' should be read from the product's own label rather than from hearsay.

The first thing that makes a difference is certification. Medical devices placed on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS), and this registration can be looked up using the unique number on the product's label. That is a more concrete check than anything you might hear said about a brand, and it applies in the same way to Turkish-made and imported products. You may want to see the registration for the product that will be used.

The second thing that makes a difference is continuity. An implant system is not just the screw in the bone; it is a whole that includes the parts that sit on top, the screws and the impression components. If you need to replace a screw ten years later, that part has to still be in production. This risk applies equally to Turkish-made and imported systems; what decides it is not origin but how long the system stays on the market.

The third thing that makes a difference is geography, and this is the one place where origin really matters. If you live in Turkey and will have your follow-up here, getting parts for a system whose manufacturer is here takes days. If you live in Germany and would go to a clinic there in an emergency, a system recognised there makes things easier for you. This is not a question of quality but of logistics.

As for the difference in price: with imported products, shipping, customs duties, the importer's margin and the exchange rate push the price up. Not all of that difference is a difference in quality. But the reverse is not true either: not every cheap Turkish-made product has been made to the same standards. The right approach is to start not from the price but from the certificates; once the certificates are on an equal footing, the price becomes an item that can be discussed.

Which one, in which situation

The distinction below is drawn not on quality but on where your life is based.

The tooth can be saved

  • If you live in Turkey and will be followed up hereWith a system whose manufacturer is here, getting screws, abutments and components takes little time. It is a concrete convenience that will come in handy several times over the years.
  • If you live outside Turkey or move oftenA system recognised across a wide geographical area means the clinic you go to in an emergency can find the right part. This is the strongest reason for choosing an imported system.
  • If you already have implantsContinuing with the same system is the right thing to do where possible. Here the debate about origin takes a back seat; what matters is being able to work with a single inventory of parts.
  • Any system whose certificates are shown to youIf the CE marking, ÜTS registration and manufacturer information can be verified, the distinction between Turkish-made and imported loses its meaning in practice. Verifiability is a stronger criterion than country of origin.

Saving it is unlikely to hold

  • Systems whose name and record are not givenIf you are not told which implant was used, the debate about origin loses its point. Asking for this information is normal; not being given it is a warning sign in itself.
  • Systems that have been withdrawn from the marketWhen a system is no longer made, its spare parts run out over time. It makes no difference whether it is Turkish-made or imported; a single loose screw can turn into remaking all the bridgework.
  • Systems chosen only for the difference in priceIn the total for a multi-unit plan, the price per implant is not usually the deciding item. Optimising the smallest item while never discussing the planning ends up costing you dearly.
  • Systems whose origin does not match the labelIf the country a brand calls to mind differs from the place of manufacture on the box, this should be asked about. The answer may well be reasonable; the problem is not asking.

Four questions to ask instead of asking about origin

Once these four have been answered, the question of 'Turkish-made or imported' fades into the background by itself.

    Can I see the ÜTS registration for the product that will be used?

    The registration can be looked up using the unique number on the label. This applies in the same way to Turkish-made and imported products, and it is far more concrete than any debate about brands.

    How long has this system been in production?

    Systems that have been on the market for a long time have stronger follow-up data and continuity of parts. A new system does not have to be bad, but more about it is unknown.

    Where do I live, and where will my follow-up take place?

    Tell your dentist the answer to this yourself. If you live outside Turkey, choosing a system that is available there settles from the outset a difference that is hard to make up for later.

    Will I be given my implant card?

    Brand, manufacturer, diameter, length, serial number and position. Whatever the country of origin, this document is the only thing you will still have in hand ten years from now.

Four things that make more difference than origin

Putting your budget and attention here gives a far better return than the debate about countries.

Planning

How many implants, in which areas, at what angle. This decision, made on a CBCT scan, determines the whole supporting structure and is the hardest thing to correct later.

Anchorage achieved at placement

How firmly the implant sits in the bone can be measured. Loading it early, before the expected anchorage has been achieved, increases the risk whichever country the product comes from.

Bite adjustment

A bridge that does not spread the load evenly produces loose screws and bone loss within months. The time spent on the bite on the day the teeth are fitted is far more decisive than any difference in origin.

Regular maintenance

Inflammation around the implant progresses without pain and causes bone loss. The only thing that catches it early is check-ups; no brand or country of origin does that job.

The most common false statements in this debate

Each side produces its own cliché, and both push the patient to look in the wrong place.

"It's cheap because it's Turkish-made, and poor quality because it's cheap"

The difference in price usually comes not from quality but from shipping, customs duties, the importer's margin and the exchange rate. Between two products made to the same standards, these items alone can create a considerable difference.

"Imported products meet European standards"

'Imported' is not the name of a standard. What decides it is which certificates the product holds and whether those certificates can be verified. This information is read not from the name of a country but from the product's own registration.

"Wherever the brand's headquarters is, that's where it's made"

Not always. Company acquisitions and contract manufacturing are common; while a brand's name may call one country to mind, the place of manufacture may be different. The information on the box is more reliable than your impression of the brand.

"If I choose a good brand, the implant will be a success"

The known causes of implant loss are led by smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, poor maintenance and errors in load distribution. Neither origin nor brand is a prominent item on this list.

What you should have in hand once the decision is made

Whichever side you choose, the following stay the same.

  1. Ask for your implant card

    Brand, manufacturer, diameter, length, serial number and the area where it was placed. This document is part of your health record, and asking for it is a normal request.

  2. Note down the manufacturer and country of origin

    The place of manufacture on the box is more reliable information than your impression of the brand. If a part ever needs to be tracked down, this is where to start.

  3. Keep the X-ray taken after treatment

    The only document that shows where your bone level was on the day of the procedure. Years later, if bone loss is being discussed, this is the point of comparison.

  4. Keep digital copies of your documents too

    Have a copy on your phone and in your email. When you move to another country, this will be the only thing you can take with you.

Message us right away if

  • You are planning to move. Before you go, get your complete record and X-rays. If a part is needed where you are going, having the system information shortens the process by weeks.
  • A screw comes loose or the prosthesis moves. Carrying on chewing with a loose screw can cause the screw to break. Removing a broken screw is a much bigger job than tightening one.
  • You do not know the brand of your implant. Call the clinic that did the treatment and ask for your record. If the clinic has closed, the system can usually be identified from an X-ray, but that takes time.
  • Your gums start to bleed or swell. Inflammation around an implant can be stopped at an early stage. Every month of delay means bone that will not come back.

What the difference in price really measures

Not all of the difference in price between Turkish-made and imported implants is a difference in quality. Separating the items makes the decision easier:

Shipping, customs duties and exchange rate
Items that push up the price of an imported product and have nothing to do with the product itself. With products made in Turkey, these items drop out.
The cost of research and follow-up
Clinical studies with long follow-up are expensive, and that is reflected in the price. What you get in return is knowing how the system performs ten years on.
Bridgework and labour
In most plans, the prosthetic material and laboratory work take up a larger share than the price of the implant itself. The debate about origin does not cover this item at all.
Repairs in the future
With a system whose parts are easy to find, a repair stays small. A part that cannot be found turns the same job into remaking the bridgework; this is the most expensive item that never appears on the bill.

Frequently asked questions

Are Turkish-made implants reliable?

Reliability is read not from the country of origin but from certification. Medical devices placed on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS), and you can also ask about the CE marking and the manufacturer's details. If these three can be verified, where the product was made is not in itself a reason for concern.

Do imported implants last longer?

There is no generalisation that shows this. In studies with long follow-up, the main causes of loss are listed as smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, poor maintenance and errors in load distribution. Country of origin is not a prominent item on this list.

I live outside Turkey. Which should I choose?

It makes sense to choose a system that is available in the country where your follow-up and any repairs will take place. You need to say this at your examination; if you do not, the choice is made according to what is commonly used in Turkey, and it is a decision that is hard to change later.

How do I know the implant used really is the brand I was told?

You can look up the Product Tracking System registration using the unique number on the product's label. Your implant card should also state the brand, manufacturer, diameter, length and serial number. Being given this document is standard practice.

Can you have both Turkish-made and imported implants in the same mouth?

Yes, and sometimes it is unavoidable. The drawback is that maintenance becomes more complicated: each system has its own parts and tools. Where possible, having the new implants from the same system as the existing ones makes any future work simpler.

Which system do you use?
