Implant Brands

Which country are Zimmer implants from?

American in origin; but since 2022 the dental implants of Zimmer and Biomet 3i have belonged to a separate company called ZimVie

Many people whose card says 'Zimmer' or 'Biomet 3i' think their implant still belongs to the orthopaedics giant Zimmer Biomet. In fact, the dental division split off in 2022, was renamed ZimVie and changed hands in 2025. Below we have set out this chain with its dates; then we move on to what your card should actually say.

Short answer

Zimmer and Biomet 3i implants are American in origin. The two companies merged in 2015 under the name Zimmer Biomet; on 1 March 2022 the dental and spine division became a separate company called ZimVie. ZimVie sold its spine business in 2024, and on 20 October 2025 it was bought by the healthcare investor ARCHIMED and taken off the stock exchange. Its head office is in Florida, and manufacturing is in Florida and Spain.

Zimmer, Biomet 3i and ZimVie: who is who

The story has two branches. The first is Zimmer: the company was founded on 2 May 1927 by Justin O. Zimmer in the town of Warsaw in the US state of Indiana, and grew as an orthopaedics company. It entered the dental implant market not with an invention of its own but through an acquisition. In October 2003 Zimmer completed its exchange offer for the Swiss-based Centerpulse AG; Zimmer's announcement describes Centerpulse as a company serving the joint, spine and dental implant markets. This Swiss link is one source of the confusion over whether Zimmer is Swiss or American.

The second branch is Biomet 3i. Implant Innovations, 3i for short, was a dental implant company founded in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The Indiana-based orthopaedics company Biomet bought 3i in 1999; a Medtech Insight report dated 6 September 1999 puts the value of the deal at 175 million dollars. From then on the brand was known as Biomet 3i.

The two branches came together in 2015. Zimmer and Biomet announced on 24 June 2015 that they had completed a 13.35 billion dollar merger, and the company took the name Zimmer Biomet. Zimmer's dental implants and Biomet 3i's implants thus came under the same roof; but they did not become a single system, and continued to exist as separate lines.

The split that really matters came on 1 March 2022. Zimmer Biomet floated its dental and spine division as a separate company called ZimVie; 80.3 per cent of the shares were distributed to Zimmer Biomet shareholders, and ZimVie began trading on Nasdaq. Since this split, dental implants have been ZimVie's business, not Zimmer Biomet's.

ZimVie did not stay a two-part business for long either. On 1 April 2024 it sold its spine business to H.I.G. Capital and carried on as a dental-only company. On 20 July 2025 it signed a sale agreement with ARCHIMED, which invests only in the healthcare sector. The deal was completed on 20 October 2025: shareholders were paid 19 dollars in cash per share, and ZimVie shares ceased trading on Nasdaq. ZimVie is today a private company.

So where is the implant made? According to ZimVie's 2024 annual report, the company has two main manufacturing facilities: one at the same site as its head office in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and one in Valencia, Spain. The same report says the company sells its products in around 50 countries and has a physical presence in around 20. That is why the 'Warsaw factory' information is out of date for dental implants; Warsaw is Zimmer Biomet's orthopaedics headquarters.

The line names carry both roots. Tapered Screw-Vent (TSV), TSX and Trabecular Metal belong to the family that comes from Zimmer's dental branch; T3, T3 Pro and OSSEOTITE belong to the family that comes from the Biomet 3i branch. The manufacturer describes TSV as having a friction-fit internal hex connection; T3 and T3 Pro are referred to on the manufacturer's pages with the Certain connection, and the same family also has an external hex catalogue. Because there is more than one connection type within the same company, knowing 'I have Zimmer' is not enough for a repair.

When reading manufacturer data, it helps to look at where they come from. ZimVie writes that TSV has been in clinical use for more than 25 years and that more than six million have been sold; the same page reports an average survival of 98.7 per cent across a total of 1,553 TSV MTX implants compiled from 14 sources; across the studies this rate ranges from 95.1 to 100 per cent, with follow-up of between 3 and 120 months (an average of 36.4 months). These are data the manufacturer has selected and presented on its own page. They should be read together with independent, long-term studies; whether a figure turns into a result in your mouth is decided by planning, load distribution and maintenance.

The Zimmer and Biomet 3i lines are conventional two-piece implants: a body that goes into the inner part of the bone and a part connected on top of it. The implant used in our protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours with the Ihde method belongs to a different class: a one-piece corticobasal implant that anchors in the hard outer layer of the jaw. These two classes give different answers to the same question; which one suits you becomes clear from a CBCT scan.

When a conventional system like Zimmer or Biomet 3i is a sensible choice

The criteria below do not depend on the name of the company; they look at the conventional two-piece implant design and can be discussed at your consultation.

When it fits

  • If there is enough bone and waiting is possibleA conventional implant needs width and height inside the bone. If the volume is there and the time needed for the implant to fuse is not a problem, this design is a well-established option that has been used for a long time.
  • If you already have implants from the same familyAdding an implant from the same family next to an old TSV or T3 keeps your inventory of parts simple. First, the family of your existing implant must be known for certain.
  • If immediate loading will be based on measurementFor TSV, the manufacturer limits immediate loading to 'appropriately selected patients', with good initial anchorage and suitable chewing loads. If the anchorage is measured and put on record, the plan is transparent.
  • If your follow-up will be in a country where the system is availableZimVie sells its products in around 50 countries. If parts are available in the country where you live, a screw that comes loose years later stays a small job.

When it doesn't

  • If there is advanced bone resorptionIf there is no volume left to anchor in, a conventional implant often needs a graft or a sinus procedure first, and treatment stretches over months. In this situation, a different class of implant that uses the hard outer layer of the bone should also be discussed.
  • If your card gives only the company name'Zimmer' or 'Biomet' is not a record. TSV or T3, which diameter and length: if this is not written down, the dentist who works in that mouth later on will be guessing when choosing parts.
  • If teeth on the same day are promised before any measurement is discussedImmediate loading is a decision made when sufficient anchorage is measured during placement. A firm promise made before any measurement has been taken suggests that the plan is being rushed.
  • If a long-established name is the only reason for the choiceA long company history is valuable, but on its own it says nothing about whether the implant suits your mouth. Suitability is read from a CBCT scan.

Five questions to ask when Zimmer or Biomet 3i is recommended

They are short questions; but their answers put on record today information that will be useful to you even if the company's name changes again.

  1. 1

    Which family and which line?

Tapered Screw-Vent, TSX, Trabecular Metal, T3 or T3 Pro. It should be possible to explain the choice in terms of the width, height and density of your bone.

  2. 2

    What type of connection?

TSV is referred to with a friction-fit internal hex connection, and the T3 family with the Certain or an external hex connection. The choice of top part, and every repair, depend on this answer.

  3. 3

If there is immediate loading, will the anchorage be measured?

The manufacturer ties immediate loading to good initial anchorage. You can ask for the insertion torque or stability measurement to be written into your record.

  4. 4

Can I see the barcode on the label?

Medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS). The number on the label shows the product's manufacturer and its registration. It is normal to see the name ZimVie on the box now.

  5. 5

Where do parts come from, and how long do they take?

Ask whether the clinic has parts in stock and, if not, who supplies them and how many days it takes. After the changes of ownership, this answer should be based on up-to-date information.

Things that make more difference than the company name

If the first four points below are in place, the difference between brands narrows; if they are not, no long-established name makes up for the gap.

01

A complete record

Line name, connection type, diameter, length, lot number and the area where it was placed. Even if the company's name changes, if you have this information another dentist can pick up the work where it was left off.

02

Supply of parts

Being able to get hold of the system in the country where you live keeps a loose screw a small job. A part that cannot be found can escalate the same problem to the point of renewing the prosthesis.

03

The dentist's experience with that line

A team that has used the same family for years knows its drilling sequence, its torque values and its typical problems. This experience is more decisive than most of the differences between two brands.

04

A plan based on a CBCT scan

The number, position and angle of the implants are decided on a three-dimensional image. Being shown the plan and having its reasoning explained is something to ask about before the brand.

05

If the loss extends to more than one tooth

If you are missing several teeth, or you have been told there is not enough bone, you can send us the panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan you have through the form. The dentist who will carry out the treatment reads the image, and we will write to you within 24 hours. This is a preliminary assessment; the final decision is made after an examination and a CBCT scan.

What often gets mixed up about Zimmer implants

When a merger, a split and a sale come one after another, old information circulates online as if it were new.

"Zimmer implants are made by Zimmer Biomet"

Not since 1 March 2022. The dental division split off under the name ZimVie; Zimmer Biomet is today an orthopaedics company. Seeing the name ZimVie on the box and the paperwork is not a sign of a fake.

"Zimmer is Swiss-made"

The company is American in origin. The confusion most likely comes from the fact that Zimmer acquired its dental branch in 2003 by buying the Swiss company Centerpulse. Today's manufacturing sites are in Florida and Spain.

"Biomet 3i and Zimmer are the same implant"

They are under the same company roof but come from separate families. The manufacturer refers to TSV with an internal hex connection and T3 with the Certain connection; parts are chosen not by company name but by line, connection, diameter and length.

"The company was sold, so my implant has been orphaned"

A sale does not mean the products have been withdrawn from the market; ZimVie's announcement that the sale had been completed still describes the company in terms of its implants, biomaterials and digital solutions. Even so, asking from time to time whether your line is still in production is a sensible habit with any brand.

"98.7 per cent success applies to every patient"

This figure is on the manufacturer's own page and relates to an average follow-up of 36 months in a particular group of patients. Your own result is determined more strongly by smoking, diabetes control, load distribution and maintenance.

What you should have if Zimmer or Biomet 3i implants have been fitted

Nobody asks for these documents today; but years from now, in another dentist's chair, they will be the first thing you are asked for.

  1. An implant card with the name of the line

The card should say more than just 'Zimmer': it should give the line name, such as TSV or T3, together with the diameter, length and lot number. If anything is missing, ask the clinic that carried out the treatment to complete it.

  2. The measured values

If immediate loading was carried out, the insertion torque or stability values. If a problem is being discussed later, these are the only record showing the initial anchorage.

  3. A copy of the barcode

The barcode on the product label carries the number that identifies the implant in ÜTS. Keep it together with your card.

  4. The X-ray from the first day

The X-ray that shows where your bone level was at the start. Only with it can any change be read when it is compared with an X-ray taken years later.

Don't wait if

  • A tooth moves or a screw feels loose. Carrying on chewing with a loose screw can break the screw. Tightening a screw early is a small job; removing a broken one is laborious.
  • There is bleeding, swelling or a bad smell around the implant. Inflammation around an implant often progresses without causing pain. Caught early, it can be stopped; regaining bone that has been lost is much harder.
  • You do not know which family was fitted. Call the clinic that carried out the treatment and ask for your record. If there is no record, the dentist will try to identify the system from an X-ray, but telling apart the families of the same company can take time.
  • Before you move. Take your card, your measured values and your X-rays with you. If a part is needed where you are going, the line and size details make it possible to order it straight away.

How choosing Zimmer shows up in the quote

Neither the implant's country nor the company's history explains the difference in a quote on its own. The total is made up of these items:

Choice of line and body
Within the same company, the lines can differ in cost. Check which line is written in the quote; the phrase 'Zimmer implant' is not enough on its own.
Top parts
Ready-made parts, patient-specific parts or parts for a multi-unit prosthesis make more difference than the implant body in most plans.
The prosthesis and laboratory work
In full-mouth plans, the material and workmanship of the bridgework make up most of the total. This is the last place where savings should be made.
Preparatory procedures and later maintenance
A graft, a sinus procedure or extractions are separate items. The burden of repairs over the years depends on how easily parts can be obtained.

Frequently asked questions

Which country are Zimmer implants from?

The USA. Zimmer was founded in 1927 in the town of Warsaw, Indiana. The dental implants, however, have belonged since 1 March 2022 to ZimVie, which split off from Zimmer Biomet; ZimVie's head office is in Florida, and it manufactures in Florida and Spain.

Which country are Biomet 3i implants from?

The USA. 3i, or Implant Innovations, was an implant company founded in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; Biomet bought it in 1999. T3 and OSSEOTITE are lines from this branch and are made today under the ZimVie umbrella.

Are Zimmer dental implants and ZimVie the same thing?

Yes, today they are the same company. Zimmer Biomet's dental and spine division split off in 2022 under the name ZimVie; in 2024 ZimVie sold its spine business and remained a dental-only company. The former 'Zimmer Dental' products continue under the ZimVie name.

Who owns ZimVie?

ARCHIMED, an investment firm that invests only in the healthcare sector and has offices in Europe, North America and Asia. The acquisition was completed on 20 October 2025; ZimVie shares were withdrawn from Nasdaq and it became a private company.

Where are Zimmer implants made?

ZimVie's 2024 annual report lists two main manufacturing facilities: Palm Beach Gardens in Florida and Valencia in Spain. The label on the box and the ÜTS record show most definitively the manufacturer details of the product you are given.

What is the difference between Tapered Screw-Vent and T3?

They come from different roots: TSV from Zimmer's dental branch, T3 from Biomet 3i. The manufacturer describes TSV as having a friction-fit internal hex connection and refers to T3 with the Certain connection; the T3 family also has an external hex option. Because the choice of top part depends on the connection type, which one your card names matters.

Are Zimmer implants any good?

It is a system that has been in use for a long time, is available across a wide network of countries and has published data behind it. The success figures the manufacturer highlights are based on data it has selected itself; read them together with independent studies. The outcome is determined more strongly by planning, load distribution, smoking, diabetes control and maintenance than by the brand.

The company has changed hands. Will spare parts still be available?

A sale does not mean the products have been withdrawn from the market. Even so, ask your clinic whether your line is still being made and who supplies it in Turkey; if your card gives the line, diameter and length, the order can be placed straight away.

Do you use Zimmer?

Our protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours works with a different class of implant: one-piece corticobasal implants that anchor in the hard outer layer of the jaw. This is not an assessment of Zimmer or Biomet 3i; if there is enough bone and time to wait, conventional systems are a sensible choice too. Which one suits you becomes clear from a CBCT scan.
