Implant Brands
Which country are Osstem implants from?
South Korea, 1997; Hiossen is Osstem's manufacturing company in the USA
Osstem is one of the Korean implants most often seen in Turkey. If your card says Hiossen instead of Osstem, we are talking about the same family. The answer to the country question is short; what really matters is knowing which line goes into your mouth, which screw it is connected with and whether this is given to you in writing.
Short answer
Osstem is a South Korean brand: the company was founded in 1997 by Choi Kyu-ok under the name D&D System, and its head office is in Seoul. In 2007 it began trading on the Korean KOSDAQ stock exchange; in 2023 the investment funds MBK Partners and Unison Capital Korea moved to take management control. Hiossen is the subsidiary Osstem set up in the USA in 2006; TS, KS, SS and MS are Osstem's implant lines.

Who Osstem is, and where it comes from
According to Osstem's own timeline, the company was founded in 1997 under the name D&D System. In its early years it developed practice management software for dentists; in 2000 it opened an implant training centre, in 2002 it set up an implant research institute, and in the same year it received FDA approval in the USA. In 2007 it began trading on the Korean KOSDAQ stock exchange. Its founder and long-time chairman is Choi Kyu-ok; the company's head office is in Seoul.
Growth quickly spread abroad. Osstem set up a subsidiary in Germany (Eschborn) in 2005, and by 2006 had subsidiaries in 12 countries. According to the company's 2025 information, it now has 33 overseas subsidiaries in 37 countries, and its 2024 sales were 960 million dollars. In Turkey the brand is represented under the name Osstem Implant Türkiye, which has a Turkish-language website.
Manufacturing is no longer limited to one country. According to a statement by the company dated March 2026, its facilities in South Korea, the USA, China and Brazil produce more than 22 million implant sets a year. The Yancheng facility in China opened in 2019; the Brazilian arm was added in 2024 with the acquisition of a Brazilian manufacturer called Implacil. Osstem's Turkish website, however, states that the manufacturing facilities for products in the country are in South Korea. The label on the box shows most definitively where the product you are given was made.
This is where the name Hiossen comes in. According to Hiossen's own website, the company was set up by Osstem in 2006 in the US state of Pennsylvania and took the name Hiossen Implant in 2007. All Hiossen implants are made and packaged in Pennsylvania. So if the card for an implant fitted in the USA says Hiossen, it is not a separate brand but the American branch of the Osstem family. On Osstem's European website, the line called ET is also offered with Hiossen's NH surface.
Ownership changed in 2023. According to a report in the Korean business press, in January 2023 the investment funds MBK Partners and Unison Capital Korea launched a tender offer of up to 2.1 trillion won to take management control of Osstem. According to the same publication's report from March 2023, the funds' stake rose to 83.34 per cent after the first tender, and a second tender was opened to take the company off the stock exchange. The founder, Choi Kyu-ok, signed an agreement to sell around half of his 20.6 per cent stake, and was expected to remain the second-largest shareholder after the sale. The same report states that Osstem, with a market share of 45 per cent in South Korea, 33 per cent in China and 8 per cent worldwide, is the largest implant manufacturer in both of these countries.
Osstem is not a single implant but a family. TS, as the manufacturer describes it, is a self-tapping, double-threaded line placed at bone level and presented as one of the most widely used implants in the world; it is offered with different surfaces such as SA, BA and SOI. KS and ET are also bone-level lines. SS is a one-stage line that sits at gum level and does not need a second surgical stage; it comes in two forms, the straight-bodied SS II and the slightly tapered SS III, with two platforms of 4.8 and 6.0 millimetres. MS is a family of thin one-piece implants designed for narrow bony ridges, denture retention and temporary use.
These differences within the same brand do not stay on paper. A laboratory study published in 2025 compared Osstem's TSIII and KSIII systems with different abutment screw designs. After repeated loading, the loss of screw tightness in TSIII ranged from 36.5 to 51.8 per cent depending on the tightening torque; in KSIII it stayed below 25 per cent at every torque level. This is a laboratory result, and the authors state that clinical confirmation is needed; but it shows that saying 'Osstem' is not enough to tell you how the screw will behave.
The practical consequence is this: if your card just says 'Osstem', that is not enough for a dentist who wants to replace a loose screw. Is it TS, KS or SS; which diameter and platform; which surface? Names that come up often in searches, such as 'TS3' and 'TSIII SA', are in fact the line and surface names that should be on your record.
Even so, the brand is the smaller half of the question. Most of Osstem's lines are conventional two-piece implants: they sit in the inner part of the bone and need enough volume there. The implant used in our protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours with the Ihde method belongs to a different class: a one-piece corticobasal implant that anchors in the hard outer layer of the jaw. Which one suits you is decided by the bone on your CBCT scan.
When a conventional system like Osstem is a sensible choice
The criteria below do not depend on the name of the line; they look at the conventional two-piece implant design and can be discussed at your consultation.
When it fits
- If there is enough bone and time is not an issueA conventional implant needs width and height in the inner part of the bone. If the volume is there and it is possible to wait for the implant to fuse, this design is a well-established option.
- If easy access to parts matters to youOsstem is represented in Turkey under its own name and has a Turkish-language website. With a widely used system, finding a screw or a top part is usually easy.
- If you want to secure your denture with a few implantsThe MS family includes thin implants designed for denture retention. Whether this suits your bone is decided by a CBCT scan and an examination.
- If you already have implants from the same lineContinuing with the same line keeps your inventory of parts simple. For that, it first has to be known for certain whether your existing implant is TS, KS or SS.
When it doesn't
- If there is advanced bone resorptionIf there is no volume left to anchor in, a conventional implant often needs a graft or a sinus procedure first, and treatment stretches over months. In this situation, a different class of implant that uses the hard outer layer of the bone should also be discussed.
- If teeth on the same day are promised before any measurement is discussedImmediate loading is a decision made when sufficient anchorage is measured during placement. A firm promise made before any measurement has been taken suggests that the plan is being rushed.
- If you are not told the name of the line'A Korean implant' or 'Osstem' is not a record. If the line, diameter, platform and surface are not written down, the dentist who works in that mouth later on will be guessing when choosing parts.
- If price is the only reason for the choicePrice is a legitimate criterion, but on its own it says nothing about whether the implant suits your mouth. Suitability is read from a CBCT scan.
Five questions to ask when Osstem is recommended
They are short questions, but their answers put on record today the information that will be useful to you years from now.
- 1
Which line will be used?
TS, KS, ET, SS or MS. Will it sit at bone level or at gum level? It should be possible to explain the choice in terms of the density, width and height of your bone.
- 2
Which surface and which platform?
Surface names such as SA, BA, SOI or NH, and the diameter and platform. These are what separate the different product codes of the same line.
- 3
What tightening torque will the abutment screw be secured with?
Laboratory data show that loosening varies with the screw design and the tightening torque. Having the torque used put on record is useful if loosening is being discussed later.
- 4
Can I see the barcode on the label?
Medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS). The number on the label shows the product's manufacturer and its registration.
- 5
Where do parts come from, and how long do they take?
Osstem is represented in Turkey under the name Osstem Implant Türkiye. Ask whether the clinic has parts in stock and, if not, how long it takes to obtain them.
Things that make more difference than the name of the line
If the first four points below are in place, the difference between brands narrows; if they are not, no brand makes up for the gap.
A complete record
Line name, surface, diameter, platform, length, lot number and the area where it was placed. If you have this information, another dentist can pick up the work where it was left off.
Tightening the screw to the right torque
Screw loosening is the most common mechanical problem in implant treatment. The right screw and the torque the manufacturer recommends are the details that determine this risk, whatever the brand.
The dentist's experience with that line
A team that has used the same line for years knows its drilling sequence, its torque values and its typical problems. This experience is more decisive than most of the differences between two brands.
A plan based on a CBCT scan
The number, position and angle of the implants are decided on a three-dimensional image. Being shown the plan and having its reasoning explained is something to ask about before the brand.
If the loss extends to more than one tooth
If you are missing several teeth, or you have been told there is not enough bone, you can send us the panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan you have through the form. The dentist who will carry out the treatment reads the image, and we will write to you within 24 hours. This is a preliminary assessment; the final decision is made after an examination and a CBCT scan.
What often gets mixed up about Osstem
The sheer number of line names and a different brand name in the USA produce a few misleading shortcuts online.
"Hiossen is a separate American brand"
Hiossen is the subsidiary Osstem set up in the USA in 2006. It manufactures in Pennsylvania, but in the company's own words its parent company is Osstem.
"Osstem is made in China"
Osstem is a South Korean company. It has also had a manufacturing facility in China since 2019, and it manufactures in the USA and Brazil too. The label on the box shows which facility a product came from.
"Osstem parts are interchangeable"
TS, KS and SS are different lines; even the abutment screws of TSIII and KSIII have different designs. Parts are chosen not by brand name but by line, diameter, platform and length.
"The owner changed, so the brand has closed down"
The 2023 deal was the transfer of management control of the company to investment funds; manufacturing and the product lines continue. In 2024 the company also bought a new manufacturer in Brazil.
"Korean-made means cheap, and cheap means bad"
Country of origin is not a measure of quality on its own. What to look at is the documentation, the continuity of the system, access to parts and the dentist's experience with that system.
What you should have if Osstem implants have been fitted
Nobody asks for these documents today; but years from now, in another dentist's chair, they will be the first thing you are asked for.
An implant card with the name of the line
The card should say more than just 'Osstem': it should give the line and surface name, such as TSIII SA or KSIII, together with the diameter, platform, length and lot number. If anything is missing, ask the clinic that carried out the treatment to complete it.
Torque values
The insertion torque and the tightening torque of the abutment screw. If screw loosening is being discussed, these are the only record showing what was done at the start.
A copy of the barcode
The barcode on the product label carries the number that identifies the implant in ÜTS. Keep it together with your card.
The X-ray from the first day
The X-ray that shows where your bone level was at the start. Only with it can any change be read when it is compared with an X-ray taken years later.
Don't wait if
- A tooth moves or a screw feels loose. Carrying on chewing with a loose screw can break the screw. Tightening a screw early is a small job; removing a broken one is laborious.
- There is bleeding, swelling or a bad smell around the implant. Inflammation around an implant often progresses without causing pain. Caught early, it can be stopped; regaining bone that has been lost is much harder.
- Your card says Hiossen. When looking for parts for a Hiossen implant fitted abroad, take your card and X-ray to a dentist who uses Osstem. Whether a part fits should be confirmed using the line and size details.
- Before you move. Take your card, your torque values and your X-rays with you. If a part is needed where you are going, the line and size details make it possible to order it straight away.
How choosing Osstem shows up in the quote
The implant's country does not explain the difference in a quote on its own. The total is made up of these items:
- Choice of line and surface
- Within the same brand, lines and surfaces can differ in cost. Check which line is written in the quote; the phrase 'Osstem implant' is not enough on its own.
- Top parts
- Ready-made parts, patient-specific parts or parts for a multi-unit prosthesis make more difference than the implant body in most plans.
- The prosthesis and laboratory work
- In full-mouth plans, the material and workmanship of the bridgework make up most of the total. This is the last place where savings should be made.
- Preparatory procedures and later maintenance
- A graft, a sinus procedure or extractions are separate items. The burden of repairs over the years depends on how easily parts can be obtained.
Frequently asked questions
Which country is Osstem from?
South Korea. The company was founded in 1997 under the name D&D System; its founder is Choi Kyu-ok, and its head office is in Seoul.
Are Hiossen and Osstem the same?
They are from the same family. Hiossen is the subsidiary Osstem set up in the USA in 2006, and it makes its implants in Pennsylvania. The card for an implant fitted in the USA may say Hiossen.
Where are Osstem implants made?
The company manufactures in South Korea, the USA, China and Brazil. Osstem's Turkish website states that the manufacturing facilities for products in the country are in South Korea. The label on the box and the ÜTS record show most definitively where the product you have was made.
Who owns Osstem?
In January 2023 the investment funds MBK Partners and Unison Capital Korea launched a tender offer to take management control of the company. The founder, Choi Kyu-ok, signed an agreement to sell around half of his stake and was expected to remain the second-largest shareholder.
What is TSIII, and how does it differ from KSIII?
Both are Osstem lines placed at bone level. TS is the line the manufacturer presents as one of the most widely used implants in the world; TSIII SA, launched in the 2010 to 2014 period, is its version with the SA surface. In a laboratory study, the different screw design of KSIII showed less loss of screw tightness under repeated loading than TSIII. Their parts are not interchangeable.
What does Osstem SS implant mean?
SS is a one-stage line that sits at gum level and does not need a second surgical stage. It is offered in two forms, the straight-bodied SS II and the slightly tapered SS III, with two platforms of 4.8 and 6.0 millimetres.
Are Osstem implants available in Turkey, and how can I tell they are genuine?
Yes; the brand is represented in Turkey under the name Osstem Implant Türkiye. To check that a product is genuine, ask to see the barcode on the label of the product that will be used: medical devices put on the market in Turkey must be registered in the Product Tracking System (ÜTS). The same information should also appear on your implant card.
Are Osstem implants any good?
It is a system with around thirty years behind it, used in many countries and, according to a 2023 report, the market leader in Korea and China. When looking at the publications, also check whether a study was done in the laboratory or in people, and who supported it. The outcome, however, is determined more strongly by planning, load distribution, smoking, diabetes control and maintenance than by the brand.
Do you use Osstem?
Our protocol of fixed teeth in 72 hours works with a different class of implant: one-piece corticobasal implants that anchor in the hard outer layer of the jaw. This is not an assessment of conventional systems such as Osstem; if there is enough bone and time to wait, they are a sensible choice too. Which one suits you becomes clear from a CBCT scan.
